Dolomites High Mountain Trail nº 2

A journey through the Dolomites! Dolomites High Mountain Trail nº 2 is one of the great classic long-distance hiking trails. It is known—fittingly—as the “Path of Legends”: the route starts in Brixen and ascends towards Plose, a panoramic peak offering views of Sass de Putia and the Odle di Eores and Odle di Funes mountain groups. The itinerary continues through legendary Dolomite landscapes, traversing imposing rock formations, tranquil plateaus, and alpine passes, until reaching the Vette Feltrine and, at the end, Feltre.

Directions

The Dolomites High Mountain Trail nº 2 starts in Brixen and initially climbs towards Plose (at an altitude of 1,900 m). Those wishing to shorten the initial ascent can take a bus to the Plose gondola’s valley station and ride the lift up to the mountain station. From there, a spectacular view of the Dolomites opens up, marking the start of the journey through the mountain landscape.

From Plose, the route continues towards the Rif. Plosehütte, a popular choice for the first overnight stay. In case that it’s fully booked, the Rossalm or Berghotel Schlemmer are excellent alternatives. From Plose, the high route winds through the Dolomites, crossing the Sass de Putia, Odle, Puez, Sella, Marmolada, and Pale di San Martino massifs, before finally reaching the Feltrine Dolomites.

Important: Appropriate equipment is required for mountain hiking. It is essential to carry sturdy footwear with good grip, warm and waterproof clothing, a sleeping bag liner for the mountain huts, sufficient food and water, maps or GPS data, and up-to-date information on the weather, huts, and itinerary stages. Check accommodation options and route details well in advance. Some sections require a good sense of direction, sure-footedness, a head for heights, and basic mountaineering skills. You hike at your own risk.

Mountain huts
Numerous mountain huts, bivouacs, and refreshment points are located along the main route. As the hike takes about two weeks, it is advisable to plan and book overnight stays well in advance. Before setting off, it is important to carefully check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and the opening times of the mountain huts.
