Brixen counts more than 21.000 inhabitants and is the third largest city in South Tyrol, after Bozen/Bolzano and Meran/Merano). According to the population census of 2011 73% of the inhabitants speak German as their mother tongue, 26% speak Italian and 1% Ladin.
The Service Sector and Tourism count almost 68% of all employees, they are followed by Industry (19%), Craft (7%) and Agriculture (6%).
Brixen was founded on 13th September 901 and is therefor one of the oldest cities in Tyrol. It has preserved many of the buildings that were built in the last centuries. In Brixen resides the Seat of the College for Philosophy and Theology and since 2001 the Faculty of Education of the Free University of Bolzano. There is even an outpost of the University of Padova.
